Jetting In? Book Ahead for Super Bowl Slots

The winner of the 2013 NFL season will be decided on February 2nd, 2014 at Super Bowl XLVIII at the MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey, a stone's throw away from New York City. In fact, both the states of New Jersey and New York are co-hosting the event, which is being billed as the first outdoor, cold-weather Super Bowl ever.

For those of you jetting in for the festivities, advance reservations will be required if you want to get a slot. The closest airport to the MetLife Stadium is Teterboro Airport (KTEB), with, at around 600 slots, will be able to fill over half the demand of the estimated 1,000 private jets clamoring for space during the event. It's by far the most convenient airport, taking just over 10 minutes by cab from the terminal to the stadium.

Teterboro Airport has five full-service FBOs: AtlanticJet AviationLandmark AviationMeridian Teterboro and Signature Flight Support. See FltPlan.com for a quick overview of all these FBOs' services

Starting on January 29th at 6:00 a.m. until February 4th, Teterboro Airport will be charging an extra $250 landing fee, charged to all non-military aircraft using the airport. The additional fee will be used for the extraordinary expenses needed at the airport to ensure a safe and efficient operation during Super Bowl. Also, FYI, the airport's voluntary night flight ban from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. - designed to keep its neighbours happy -  will not be lifted, and there will be a no fly zone on Super Bowl Sunday,

If Teterboro Airport hangs a NO VACANCY sign on it's control tower, the next closest airport is Newark Liberty (EWR), a 20-minute cab ride away. Newark Liberty has one full service FBO, Signature Flight Support, who cut the ribbon on an $11 million private passenger terminal in early December, 2013.

Morristown Municipal Airport (KMMU). Although MMU is a bit further out - just over a half hour cab ride, it operates 24 hours a day, with no night time flight restrictions. Morristown requires advanced reservation with both it and one of the two FBOs on site - .FTC FBO and Signature Flight Support,. There is a $300 non-refundable fee. Morristown will be shutting down an entire runway to use as parking between January 28th and February 2nd.

I'm a fan of the black and yellow, the Pittsburgh Steelers. And although my team needs a lot of help from other teams to have a chance of making it to the playoffs -- and to Super Bowl XLVII, I'm an eternal optimist. If they do, I expect I'll be watching the game at home, my Terrible Towel at hand, ready to cheer on my team.
